Keep heading South, you’ll cruise past the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Mangatepopo Valley near Whakapapa. Lave flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and dope views combine to make this a memorable road trip.
So you want to check out those glow-worm caves now huh? Head west to Taumarunui, up through Pureora Forest Park and into Waitomo. The Waitomo Caves is famous for its subterranean splendour. Beneath the surface is a series of vast cave systems decorated with icicles and thousands of those sexy glow-worms.
Check in at Hamilton and cruise along the Waikato River
On your way back up to Hamilton, make sure you pull in at the kiwi house in Otorohanga - it’s where you can meet New Zealand’s national symbol. Feeling a bit hungry? Hop back in your campervan and head into Hamilton. Here you’ll discover a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, museums, the botanic gardens and more.
The Waikato River awaits, accompanying you for most of the journey back to Auckland. You’ll drive past Waingaro Hot Springs, a lovely place to take a loved one.
